It amazes me how much you learn about real world SEO from doing web spam. Many people seem to think that building or promoting sites for the corporate world is an entirely different game than making a simple spammy site for adsense or afiliate but for me the lessons you learn from spam apply across all that you do.
The main reason I believe this is that spam is SEO in the real world, its results driven work and it gives you feedback far quicker than long term client work will ever do.
These are some of the things that spam teaches you that have applications within safer SEO: -
Crawl rate and the effect of different linking, both in and out
Understanding where the user will look and click is vital to spam and has also helped me a great deal in revamping client sites
Spam makes you think on a page by page level - something that is often missing from the corporate world
How to kick start indexing when the bots arent playing the game
Places you can get content from and the risks attached
Tactics for Social media and how to use them well
Any more you can think of ?
